How to tell if a tooth is cracked?

Had a large filling replaced on an upper molar last year and now it is hurting like the dickens. Nothing shows up on the x-ray and no obvious infection. Is there any way to tell if a tooth is cracked without doing root canal? Or is that the only way? Thanks.

Clenching is not the same as grinding. Group function and balancing side function can cause grinding, but I have no answers for preventing clenching.

About an hour ago I was walking outside and out of the blue, tooth #8 got a sharp, piercing type of pain. I felt a similar pain last week in tooth #10 but not quite as bad.
